Spring? Summer? Fall...?
Some ideas to bridge the gap when the weather doesn't know WHAT it's doing
**Note: this one is long, so make sure to read online/in the app so that the content isn’t cut off.
Once again I looked back at my post from this time last year (some good ideas for reference!), but I wrote it earlier in the season and by now you’d really expect we’d be deeper into true warmer weather styling, but I swear I brought out my wool coat one day last week and wore a tank top the next, so it truly feels like we’re flying by the seat of our pants day-to-day. It can feel jarring flipping back and forth so quickly between temps because it’s difficult to fall into a rhythm and feel seasonally appropriate. Weather aside, I’ve reached my limit and decided to fully root myself in Spring/Summer, even if some artful layering is required to keep my temperature regulated (no more wool coats!). And so, here are a few ideas to help you migrate over to the current season, and brave the inevitable cold-to-hot swings along the way.
Knits
I am heavily biased here, but I think a great selection of knitwear is a foundational must for a closet - which includes a selection that works for this time of year (this, size down, and this, size up, are fav’s). Knits are great because you can use them to help you bring in selective warmer weather pieces when you’re not ready to fully embrace them head to toe. Examples…
Pair knits with poplin, linen, and taffeta bottoms/dresses. You achieve a nice little contrast here and if the temps rise throughout the day, you can still throw the knit over your shoulders/around your waist and look cute.
Wear knit tee’s and shells in place of jersey ones. A little extra warmth with a bit more structure, drape, and polish, and easy to layer over with a jacket when you need to. This is a great way to work in summer suiting too - try pairing it with a light tonal knit before you’re ready for summer weight layers.
Knits as scarves. Your knits can be used around your shoulders for just the right amount of warmth on your commute to work, when the AC is absurdly high at your desk, or on your way home for the day when the temps drop yet again. This also works over your trenches, or over more formal wear like suiting too!
